Letopis (genre)

Letopis (Russian: летопись) is the name of one of the literary genres of Kievan Rus' (along with such common genres as "Word", "Life", Kormchaia), written in the Old Russian. It was also distributed in the Czech, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania and Latvia. Most of the letopises are author's works, which describe the genealogy and biography of the Old Russian knyazes, the life of the people of Ancient Russia, and interpret events and signs from an Orthodox and eschatological point of view (see “”).
