Founding member Ben Schneider began writing music in his hometown of Okemos, Michigan. During high school Schneider and Tom Renaud performed together in a ska-core band called Razor Dave. The band recorded an album that was never released though a few of the tracks along with various live recordings appeared on compilation CDs put together by DIY labels. Schneider went on to study visual art at the University of Michigan and finished his degree in France, before moving to New York where he worked for an artist. During his time at U of M Schneider collaborated again with Renaud on a project called Arcaid. They recorded a six song EP that was never released. In 2005, Schneider moved to Los Angeles.
