Arthur Ashe was the defending champion but lost in the semi-finals to Rod Laver, in which he defeated compatriot Tony Roche 7–9, 6–1, 6–2, 6–2 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1969 US Open, becoming the only man to complete the Grand Slam in the open era.
