Chris Evert was the defending champion, but she lost in the semifinals to World No. 1 Martina Navratilova. World No. 2 Steffi Graf defeated Navratilova, 6–4, 4–6, 8–6, in the final to win her first Grand Slam title. This tournament also saw another first, with a Grand Slam debut from future World No. 1 and French Open Champion Arantxa Sánchez Vicario.
