Roger Federer was the defending champion but lost in the semifinals to Marat Safin despite holding a match point in the fourth set. Safin won the title, defeating home player Lleyton Hewitt in the final, 1–6, 6–3, 6–4, 6–4. It was Safin's second and last Grand Slam title, having also won the 2000 U.S. Open.
