Ahrar Party (India)

The Ahrar Party known as the Majlis-e-Ahrar-e-Islam and Majlis-E-Ahrar Islam Hind is a political party, founded in India in 29 December 1929. The group was composed of Indian Muslims disillusioned by the Khilafat Movement, which cleaved closer to the Congress Party. The party was based in Punjab. It gathered support from the urban lower-middle class. Chaudhry Afzal Haq, Maulana Habib-ur-Rehman Ludhianvi and Syed Ata Ullah Shah Bukhari were the leader of the party. The Ahrar Party also served as a type of Muslim self-defense militia against Hindu paramilitaries.
