Caloplaca ignea

Caloplaca ignea (flame firedot lichen) is a brilliant red-orange crustose areolate lichen found in the southwestern United States. It has narrow to linear lobes radiating from its center (placoidioid), being paler in color at the outer edge. It is in the Caloplaca genus of the Teloschistaceae family. It has small .3 - 1 mm apothecia discs. In the foothills of the western United States Sierra Nevada (US) it grows with brilliant yellow Acarospora socialis to add spectacular color to the scenery.
