Capelle aan den IJssel [kaːˈpɛlə aːn dɛn ˈɛi̯səl] is a town and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality had a population of 66,261 in 2014, and covers an area of 15.40 km2 (5.95 sq mi), of which 1.15 km2 (0.44 sq mi) is water. It is situated on the eastern edge of Rotterdam, on the Hollandse IJssel river. Capelle aan den IJssel's most famous resident is former Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende, who has lived there since 1999.
