Depopulation of the Great Plains

The Depopulation of the Great Plains refers to migration of people from the rural areas of the Great Plains of the United States to urban areas and to the east and west coasts. This phenomenon of rural to urban migration occurred in most areas of the United States but was especially pronounced in the Great Plains where many counties have lost more than 60 percent of their population. Depopulation began in the early 1900s, accelerated in the Dust Bowl years of the 1930s and has continued through the most recent census of 2010.
