Dialectical materialism (abbreviated diamat) is a philosophy concerning science and nature, based on the writings of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and conceived of largely in Russia and the Soviet Union. Inspired by the dialectic and materialist philosophical traditions, diamat posits that the natural world evolves new qualities of being at each stage of evolution in which the elements that make up the whole form a unique interconnected system.
