Gateway Project

The Gateway Project is the planned expansion and renovation of the Northeast Corridor (NEC) rail line between Newark, New Jersey, and New York City, New York. The proposed project would cost tens of billions of dollars and once completed would increase the segment of the NEC to carry at least an additional 25 trains per hour and provide high-speed capacity. The existing two tracks on the rail line used by Amtrak (AMTK) and New Jersey Transit (NJT) have reached full capacity. The line's original tunnels and bridges were built over 100 years ago and suffered major damage during Hurricane Sandy.
