History of Pomerania (1945–present)

After the post-war border changes, the German population that had not yet fled was expelled. The area east of the Oder, known as Farther Pomerania (German: Hinterpommern), and the Szczecin (Stettin) area were resettled primarily with Poles. Some of the German cultural heritage was removed and some reconstructed. Most of Western Pomerania remained in East Germany and was later merged into Mecklenburg. The name Pomerania comes from Slavic po more, which means "land by the sea".
