The municipality has a population of 9,939(31 March 2016) and covers an area of 1,519.67 square kilometres (586.75 sq mi) ofwhich 383.62 km2 (148.12 sq mi)is water. The population density is8.75 inhabitants per square kilometre (22.7/sq mi). Neighbour municipalities are Heinävesi, Joroinen, Kuopio, Pieksämäki, Suonenjoki, Tuusniemi and Varkaus. The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
