The popularity of the specials gave way to the 1986 animated series which first aired from September 15, 1986 to September 23, 1987 with 27 episodes. A feature-length movie titled My Little Pony: The Movie was also released in June 13, 1986 before the series was created. The characters would typically alternate between starring roles and cameo appearances in various episodes.
