Man of Sorrows (Geertgen tot Sint Jans)

Man of Sorrows is a small oil on wood Early Netherlandish painting completed c. 1485-1495. Generally attributed to Geertgen tot Sint Jans, it comprises an unusually complex and suffocating spatial design, and combines themes of the mocking of Jesus with a representation of the grieving mother. The panel is seeped in both iconography and pathos; Christ is in obvious pain and looks out at the viewer with one foot in and one foot out of the grave; around him angels hover holding objects associated with his passion and death.
