It was established 1835 as Medical College, Bengal. It was the second college to teach European medicine in Asia (after Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry), and the first to teach in English. The hospital associated with the college is one of the largest hospitals in Kolkata. The college imparts the degree Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) as well as specialised and post-doctoral degrees. Nursing and para-medical courses are also offered.
