Nurmes

Nurmes is a town and municipality of Finland. It was located in the former province of Eastern Finland until 2010 and is now in the North Karelia region. The town has a population of 7,983 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 1,854.79 square kilometres (716.14 sq mi) of which 253.7 km2 (98.0 sq mi)is water. The population density is 4.99 inhabitants per square kilometre (12.9/sq mi).Nurmes railway station is now the northern terminus of a twice-daily VR passenger train service from Joensuu; the service will be withdrawn in 2016. The railway north of Nurmes is open for freight only.
