Kennedy, a member of the Democratic Party and the 35th President of the United States, took office after defeating Vice President Richard Nixon in the 1960 presidential election. At age 43, Kennedy became the youngest elected president, the first president born in the 20th century, and the first and (to date) only Roman Catholic president. Kennedy served as president until he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963. He was succeeded by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson.
