The Chola emperor Raja Raja, who was the builder of the great temple of Tanjore, came here to pray to Shiva as Kumara Natha or Nilakantheshvara for a son. His prayer was answered and a son whome he named Rajendra was born. The sthala vriksham or sacred tree of this temple is the velerukku tree.
