Tuvalu became the 189th member of the United Nations in September 2000. At present, the country's Permanent Representative to the United Nations is Ambassador Aunese Simati. Tuvalu is one of 19 states not recognising the People's Republic of China, one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
