World War II in Yugoslav Macedonia started with the Axis occupation of Yugoslavia. Macedonian Partisans of the People's Liberation Army of Macedonia, part of the Yugoslav Partisan movement, started a political and military campaign on 11 October 1941 to resist the occupation of Vardar Macedonia by Bulgarian, German, Italian, and Albanian forces. Initially it had no real success, starting to grow only in 1943 with the capitulation of Italy and the Soviet victories over Nazi Germany. The resistance lasted until the end of 1944 when communist Yugoslavia was established.
