2009 US Open – Women's Singles

Kim Clijsters defeated first time Grand Slam finalist Caroline Wozniacki in the final, 7–5, 6–3, to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2009 US Open. Clijsters became the first unseeded player and wild card to win the tournament, and the first mother to win a major since Evonne Goolagong in 1980 Wimbledon Championships. Following her win, she appeared at 19th in the rankings. This was the first time since the 2007 Australian Open where Clijsters participated in a Grand Slam, as she was just returning to the sport. Serena Williams was the defending champion, but was controversially defeated in the semifinals by the eventual champion Clijsters due to Williams being assessed a point penalty following Clijsters being awarded two match points for a foot fault by Williams.
