The capture of New Amsterdam was the bloodless action in September 1664 of an English expedition led by Richard Nicolls, in the year before the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Peter Stuyvesant at first wished to offer resistance, but ceded to overwhelming popular opinion in the colony and the Articles of Surrender of New Netherland was negotiated.
