Direction – Slovak Social Democracy

Direction – Slovak Social Democracy (Slovak: SMER – slovenská sociálna demokracia, SMER-SD) is a political party in Slovakia led by former prime minister Robert Fico. It was founded in 1999 as a split from the post-communist Party of Democratic Left and it quickly became one of the most popular parties in Slovakia. Their first victory was in 2006 when they on 29.14% of the popular vote and they continued to serve as Slovakia's ruling party until 2020, with a break between 2010 and 2012. In the 2020 election, they dropped their title for being the largest party in the parliament and are currently polled as the fourth largest party by popularity.
