Firestone and Ford tire controversy

The Firestone and Ford tire controversy was a period of unusually high failures of Firestone P235/75R15 ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness AT tires installed on the Ford Explorer and other related vehicles. Subsequent investigations linked the tire failures to accidents resulting in 271 fatalities and over eight hundred injuries in the United States dating back to the early 1990's, with more injuries and fatalities occurring internationally. The revelation of the defects led Bridgestone/Firestone and Ford Motor Company to issue a recall on 14.4 million tires in the United States in August 2000, with additional recalls in other international markets.
