George Ellwanger

George Ellwanger (December 2, 1816 – November 26, 1906) was a prominent horticulture scientist. Ellwanger was born in Württemberg, Germany and emigrated to the United States. Settling in Rochester, New York Ellwanger joined with Patrick Barry to form the Mount Hope Nursery (also known as the Ellwanger and Barry Nursery) in 1840. He also became an American citizen in 1840. In 1843 the nursery began publishing catalogs to increase sales. The standard author abbreviation Ellw. is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.
