Henry George Elliot
Maj. Sir Henry George Elliot KCMG (25 December 1826 Niagara Falls, Ontario - 29 November 1912 Pietermaritzburg), was a Canadian-born soldier and administrator, and Chief Magistrate of the Tembuland territories in South Africa from 1891 to 1902. He was a son of Maj. J. F. Elliot. In the 1880s Elliot acquired from the Pondo chief rights over some land at the mouth of the Umzimvubu River. Traders soon settled there and coasters were able to steam some 18 km up the river to load cargoes of maize. The town later became known as Port St. Johns.
