John E. Savage

John Edmund Savage is an American computer scientist and An Wang Professor of Computer Science at Brown University. Savage earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965, under the supervision of Irwin M. Jacobs. After leaving MIT, he worked briefly for Bell Laboratories before joining the Brown faculty in 1967. He is the author of the book Models of Computation: Exploring the Power of Computing (Addison-Wesley, 1998). In 1979 he and Andries Van Dam co-founded Brown's Computer Science program. Savage served as the department's second chair from 1985 to 1991.
