Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mayer moved to Atlanta, Georgia and began playing in local clubs in 1998. He released the extended play Inside Wants Out in September of the following year. Aware later signed Mayer and released his full-length debut studio album, Room for Squares, in June 2001.
