This President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia is the head of state and head of government of Bolivia, elected by popular vote to a 5-year (historically 4-year) term. Since the office was established in 1825, 65 men and 2 women have served as president. Who the first president was is disputed among scholars. While Simón Bolívar was proclaimed "liberator" on 11 August 1825, and the country named after him, he was never sworn-in having renounced the title in favor of Antonio José de Sucre.
