Manabi Bandyopadhyay was born in Naihati, West Bengal in an educated family as Somnath Bandyopadhyay. She is the first transgender professor and first transgender person in India who has completed Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in India. Bandyopadhyay was associate professor in Bengali at Vivekananda Satobarshiki Mahavidyalaya when she did her MPhil and she completes her Doctor of Philosophy in Jadavpur University in 2005 and gets convocation in 2006. She struggles a lot in her teaching profession and even she gets attacks and insults from the staffs when she was working in Vivekananda Satobarshiki Mahavidyalaya.So she then moved out of it and completed her Ph.d.
