The Nationality law of North Macedonia is governed by the Constitution of the Republic of North Macedonia (article 4) of 1991 and the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of North Macedonia (Macedonian: Закон за државјанството на Република Северна Македонија) of 1992 (with changes made in various years through to 2019).Macedonian citizenship is based primarily on the principle of Jus sanguinis. In other words, one usually acquires Macedonian citizenship if a parent is a Macedonian national, irrespective of place of birth.
