The airport is located 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south of Santa Marta city centre, the capital of Magdalena Department, on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. 18 kilometres (11 mi) north of the municipality of Ciénaga in Colombia. It is named in honour of Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), the military and political leader who played a leading role in the establishment of several South American countries as sovereign states.
