Differential norming
Differential norming is the process of adjusting the scores on a standardized test based on the race of the test takers. This involves administering an identical test to all participants but scoring the test differently according to race. It is intended to correct for the test’s bias that favors Whites over minorities. If using differential norming, a minority test taker who has the same raw score as a White test taker would actually be ranked higher than the White individual. Differential norming, or race-norming, is unlawful as identified in the Civil Rights Act (1991)
