The song was released in 1984 as the second single from her third studio album, Self Control. It was a moderate-sized hit in the United States reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance chart and number 13 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The single became Branigan's fifth US Top 20 hit. Branigan's performance of "The Lucky One" won the Grand Prix award at the Tokyo Music Festival held April 1 1984; the prize was three million yen ($13,400).
