2005 US Open – Women's Singles

Kim Clijsters, the runner-up in 2003, won in the final 6–3, 6–1 against Mary Pierce to win the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2005 US Open. This was her first Grand Slam singles title and first of three US Open titles. Svetlana Kuznetsova was the defending champion, but was defeated by Ekaterina Bychkova in the first round. Kuznetsova became the first US Open champion to lose in the first round of her title defense and the only one to do so until Angelique Kerber in 2017.
