Victoria Azarenka won her maiden Grand Slam title, beating 2008 champion Maria Sharapova 6–3, 6–0 in the final to capture the Women's Singles tennis title at the 2012 Australian Open. Kim Clijsters was the defending champion, but was defeated in the semifinals by eventual champion Azarenka. Azarenka became the new WTA No. 1 singles player for the first time in her career following the tournament by reaching the final. Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitová and Sharapova were also in contention for the No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament.
