Jack Sock was the defending champion, but lost to Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals. As a result of his failure to defend his title as well as his failure to qualify for the ATP Finals, Sock fell out of the top 100 in the rankings after starting the season inside the top 10. Karen Khachanov won his first Masters 1000 title, beating Novak Djokovic in the final, 7–5, 6–4. En route to the final, Khachanov had to save two match points to defeat John Isner in the third round.
