79th Group Army

The 79th Group Army, formerly the 39th Group Army, is a military formation of roughly corps strength, of the People's Liberation Army of China. It is part of the Northern Theater Command (and previously the Shenyang Military Region). The 79th Group Army has more main battle tanks than any other group armies in China, as it was expected to counter the threat of Soviet armor in the Far East. Along with 38th Army stationed near Beijing, this unit is given the best equipment and training available. In April 1953, the corps returned from North Korea and redeployed at Liaoyang, Liaoning Province.
