Bertrand Hallward

Bertrand Leslie Hallward (24 May 1901 – 17 November 2003) was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham. Hallward was a pupil at Haileybury College, an undergraduate at King's College, Cambridge, and a Classics don at Peterhouse, Cambridge, prior to becoming headmaster of Clifton College (1938–1948). During the war he was forced to take the school into wartime exile in Bude, North Cornwall, where it nevertheless flourished under his leadership and came top of the national academic league tables.
