European Market Infrastructure Regulation

The European Market Infrastructure Regulation (EMIR) is an EU regulation for the regulation of over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives, central counterparties and trade repositories. It was originally adopted by the EU legislature on July 4, 2012 and came into force on August 16, 2012. Its full technical standards were adopted by the European Commission on December 19, 2012 and came into effect on March 15, 2013. The objective of the legislation is to reduce systemic counterparty and operational risk, and help prevent future financial system collapses.
