Gansu ultramarathon disaster
On 22 May 2021, twenty-one professional runners died from hypothermia out of the 172 competing in a 100 kilometer (62 mi) trail running race held in the high-altitude Yellow River Stone Forest, a treeless karst terrain in Jingtai County, Gansu, China. The race was organized by the local government there. The fatalities and the fatality rate of 12 percent surpassed the in 1986 in China.
