Hans Michael Maitzen (born 28 March 1943 in Graz) is an Austrian astronomer. After elementary (1949-1953) and secondary school attendance (1953-1961) in Graz, he began studying astronomy, mathematics and physics at the University of Graz in 1961, completing a PhD in astronomy in July 1967. During the last three years of his studies he was also a scientific assistant at the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Graz. Maitzen is married and has four children.
