History of the Spanish language
L'espagnol (ou castillan) est une langue romane apparue autour des VIIIe siècle et IXe siècle et issue du latin vulgaire parlé dans la région cantabrique après le déclin de l'Empire romain. Au cours des 1 000 dernières années, il s'est diffusé vers le sud jusqu'à la mer Méditerranée en accompagnant la constitution et l'expansion du Royaume de Castille, avant d'être implanté dans l'Empire colonial espagnol, essentiellement en Amérique. Il est aujourd'hui la langue romane la plus parlée, première langue de plusieurs centaines de millions de personnes, langue officielle de 21 pays et l'une des six langues officielles de l'Organisation des Nations unies.
