Human rights applied to encryption is an important concept for freedom of expression as encryption is a technical resource of implementation of basic human rights. With the evolution of the digital age, application of freedom of speech becomes more controversial as new means of communication and restrictions arise including government control or commercial methods putting personal information to danger. From a human rights perspective, there is a growing awareness that encryption is an important piece of the puzzle for realizing a free, open and trustworthy Internet.
