The township was originally founded as the settlement of Piscatawaytown, a small neighborhood that still exists within it, and incorporated as Raritan Township on March 17, 1870. As of the 2010 United States Census, Edison had a total population of 99,967, making it the fifth-most populous municipality in New Jersey. Edison's population reached 100,000 in 2010 and had increased to a Census-estimated 100,693 by 2018. The township had a total area of 30.638 square miles (79.351 km2).
