Mazıdağı

Mazıdağı (Kurdish: Şemrex‎) is a town and district of Mardin Province in the southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey. Sunni Muslim Kurdish people form a majority in this district. Mazıdağı has been the administrative name since the Ottoman period. The native name of the central town is Şemrex. At the end of the 14th century, Timur attacked the town, which was inhabited by the Yezidis at the time, and put its people to the sword. Many Kurdish inhabitants moved to the provinces centre such as Diyarbakır, Mardin and Batman due to poverty and the conflict between the Turkish government and the PKK.
