Maiko wear it during a ceremony called erikae, which marks their graduation from maiko to geisha. Maiko use black wax to stain their teeth as well. Crane and tortoiseshell ornaments are added as hair accessories. The style is twisted in many knots, and is quite striking and elaborate.
