Shandilya (Rishi)

Shandilya (IAST: Śāṇḍilya, Sanskrit: शाण्डिल्य) was the name of a prominent Rishi and was the progenitor of the Śāṇḍilya gotra, which is also one of the top 8 highest Brahmin gotras (lineages). The name derives from the Sanskrit words Śaṇ (which roughly translates to : Full), and Dilam (translating to : The Moon), thus meaning Full Moon, therefore implying Śāṇḍilya to be the priest (sage) of the Moon God.
