Sick leave in the United States

The United States does not currently require that employees have access to paid sick leave to address their own short-term illnesses or the short-term illness of a family member. The availability of paid sick leave depends upon where the worker is located. As of 2018, ten US states (Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington); 23 US cities; and two US counties (Montgomery County, Maryland and San Francisco County, California) have laws mandating paid sick leave. Other jurisdictions have proposed legislation to enact paid sick leave.
